PAULA drinking water systems

PAULA is a small water treatment plant for the production of hygienically safe drinking water, even in remote areas. PAULA was developed by two German engineers, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frechen and Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Max Preussner at Kassel University, Germany. Prof. Preussner has been working in Vietnam since 2004 and managed the installation of the first two prototypes of PAULA in the Dong Thap Province.

The system undergoes constant, continuous research with the goal of improving both efficiency and performance. PAULA is the enhanced and enlarged “sister” of “PAUL the Water Backpack”, a well-known disaster-relief device that was also developed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frechen.

PAULA’s heart is a nano filtration membrane. The entire plant comprises the necessary pumps, piping instalallation and even a chlorination if required. The core components like pumps, membrane, and chlorine unit are made in Japan, Germany and France. The PAULA treatment plant is installed on a reinforced concrete ground slab and can be roofed with wood, steel sheets or any local construction material.

Paul water backpack

Paul is a water filter that ensures a fast supply of drinking water either in disaster areas or in rural areas. The device filters pathogens out of the water, making it drinkable and offering effective protection against cholera, typhus and other infectious diseases. paul can be carried by only one person as a backpack to remote areas since it weighs only 20 kg. Paul filters at least 1,200 litres of water each day and can thus supply up to 400 people.

The filter is easy to use. Pour the dirty water in at the top, and draw off clean drinking water from the tap after only a few minutes. The device works reliably for years without any energy consumption, chemicals or additives. It is extremely robust and has no moving parts. The manual consists of simple pictograms that can also be understood by illiterates. Anyone can therefore use the device. It helps people to help themselves.
